Technical Communication Certificate: Admission

Several of the following links require Adobe Acrobat Reader.

If you are interested in enrolling in the Certificate, you can pick up an application packet from the Technical Communication Office, or call the Program Assistant to send you one.

You can also download and print the material in the application and program plan forms, as well as course and portfolio requirements using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Course descriptions are also available via the College of Engineering.

The TCC Program admits students who have completed basic undergraduate courses in the sciences and humanities in their working toward a bachelor degree; if you have not completed this course work, you must do so first. The Program Director or Program Assistant can help you plan your prerequisite course work.

Prerequisites to Enter the TCC Program

  • General Communication course Part A or equivalent ( EPD 155 Basic Communication, 2 cr, for engineering students).
  • Four courses (12-credit minimum) in science and/or engineering, including at least one intermediate-level (minimum 200-level) course.
  • Three courses (9-credit minimum) in humanities, social sciences, and/or foreign language.

To apply, you must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and a grade of at least a B in the General Communication course. Before applying, also read the graduation requirements and then follow these steps:

  1. TCC applications are accepted at any time during the semester. Students are encouraged to submit applications as early as possible.
  2. Obtain an application packet from the TC Office or download the application form (please see information above).
  3. Obtain a current transcript or DARS report to submit with your application.
  4. Complete the application and submit it to the TC Office (Room M1080 Engineering Centers Building).

If you have any questions regarding these steps, contact our Program Assistant, or e-mail tc@tc.engr.wisc.edu. To discuss eligibility, transfer of courses, or general curriculum planning for the Certificate, you should set up a meeting with the Program Director.

When completing the application, give special attention to the Objective Statement. This part of the application gives you an opportunity to tell why you want to pursue a Certificate in Technical Communication. After your application is submitted, it is reviewed by the Admissions Committee. The committee usually completes reviews two weeks after the application deadline. All applicants receive a letter informing them of the committee's decision and further instructions.
